Who We Are

Manheim Area Water & Sewer Authority (MAWSA) is a small, self-operating, non-PUC regulated, municipal water and wastewater authority.

Reliable Water & Wastewater Solutions Provider

Manheim Area Water & Sewer Authority (MAWSA) supplies approximately 3,100 water and 2,300 wastewater customers in the Manheim area (Manheim Borough, and portions of Penn and Rapho Townships, in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania).

We are run by an appointed Board of seven. There are five representatives from Manheim Borough, one from Penn Township, and one from Rapho Township. The board members make up several committees, and oversee an administrative and service team, as well as partner with professional service entities to fulfill our mission.

Our Mission

To provide safe and reliable water and wastewater services in an efficient, cost-effective and environmentally friendly manner, resulting in a high level of satisfaction among our customers.

Environmentally Friendly

Environmentally Friendly Sludge Management

The treatment process naturally produces sludge that requires disposal. To handle this, MAWSA treats the sludge specifically for land application. Consequently, this method is far more environmentally friendly than traditional landfill disposal.

Safety and DEP Regulations

Furthermore, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) strictly regulates the use of sewage sludge in agriculture. Their guidelines protect the soil, vegetation, animals, and humans from potential harm.

Specifically, the DEP sets maximum limits for heavy metal concentrations. In addition, they ban the spreading of sludge if the concentration of certain substances in the soil exceeds these safe values.

Economic and Agricultural Benefits

Moreover, land application offers significant advantages to our community. It reduces the overall cost of sewage treatment by lowering disposal expenses. Additionally, this process provides essential nitrogen and phosphorus for many local crops, serving as a sustainable nutrient source.
